Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion animated dark fantasy horror film written and directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman’s novella of the same name. Produced by Laika as the studio’s first feature film, it features the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., and Ian McShane. The film tells the story of its titular character discovering an idealized parallel universe behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that it contains a dark and sinister secret.

I’d like to start by saying that this is a family film, but I’m not entirely sure about that as it is quite scary in the Other World. But the first two-thirds of the movie are the childish meanderings of young girl dealing with a big change, moving to a new house.
She does her best to acclimate, but the Other World has more to offer her young mind, and everyone is decidedly more friendly towards her, even making her favorite foods and letting her do whatever she wants to do…. but as any horror movie goes, we know that none of this will end well. At least not without great effort.
Neil Gaiman is a wonderful author of dark fantasy and he spins a wonderful tale about growing up, and if you do get the chance I highly recommend reading the book that this movie is based on .
