The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. An adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s fantasy novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the film was primarily directed by Victor Fleming (who left the production to take over the troubled Gone with the Wind), and stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton. Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf received credit for the screenplay, while others made uncredited contributions. The music was composed by Harold Arlen and adapted by Herbert Stothart, with lyrics by Edgar “Yip” Harburg.

I watched this movie as a little kid time and time again, and then again as an adult, and then I read the books. The continuing books are… well, interesting that’s for sure. There are also several other movies and spin-offs from the original book, there’s actually 3 movies prior to this one, even a silent film.

This one is the classic one that almost everyone knows, with Judy Garland as Dorothy and her marvelous rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. There’s many things I could say about this movie, but I’ll just leave you with this: watch the movie, listen to the soundtrack, enjoy a classic family movie about the importance of home.

  1. Very good film still holds up, there’s something very magical and otherworldly about this, from the moment it changes to color when Dorothy arrives in Oz, classic movie.
